Feb 23, 1922 to Dec 24, 2023
Ed has returned home for Christmas to be with his Lord and Saviour in the evening hours of December 24, 2023 at the age of 101. He leaves to mourn his wife of 79 years, Hilda, daughter Evelyn (Eric) Heilman, Grandchildren Raeleen (Brent) Metzker and Trent (Nicole) Heilman and great granddaughters Peyton, Kali, Shaylan and Taylor.
Ed was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta to John and Augusta Karlo on February 23, 1922. He was only 13 years old when his father fell ill so he had to leave school to work on the family farm West of Wetaskiwin. In addition to working on the farm he started clerking at auction companies and then started Ed Karlo Auctions which he operated from 1951 to 1994. He also auctioned for 57 years at Vold, Jones, Vold Auctions in Ponoka as well as working with Zimmerman Auctions. He took great pride in volunteering his gift at many fundraisers including Ducks Unlimited, The Horizon Centre, various 4-H clubs and the Rotary Club. He retired in 2014 at the age of 92 years.
In his retirement he kept busy by working at the Heilman farm, gardening at Raeleen & Brent’s, curling during the winter as well as camping and attending the Ponoka and Buck Lake Stampedes. You could also find Ed and Hilda out daily for their morning coffee with Hilda’s sisters and their husbands.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, John and Augusta Karlo, brother Allan Karlo, sisters Frieda Klassen and Margaret Kovalchik.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 25 at 1:30 pm at Grace Lutheran Church 4218 – 56 Ave, Wetaskiwin, Ab. A lunch will follow the funeral service. (The Interment will be at St John’s Lutheran Church cemetery and will precede the funeral at 11:00 am)
