Hilda Irene Dewald
November 23, 1928 ~ October 9, 2023 (age 94)
Hilda Irene Dewald entered her eternal rest on Thanksgiving Day, Monday, October 9, 2023 at the age of 94.
She was born on November 23, 1928 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. She was the second daughter of Alex and Lydia Woitt. She grew up on her Mom and Dad’s farm 8 miles west of Wetaskiwin. Her early years were typical of farm life at that time. Her mornings started by bringing in wood for the stove. In the summer she would be found in the vegetable garden picking peas or beans. She attended school at Bigstone School where she made many lifelong friends. She learned to play the piano and music would become a lifelong passion for her. Her leisure time was spent skating with friends on the frozen creek that ran through the property or visiting her favorite aunt, Bertha Fee, in Edmonton. Her dad wanted her to attend high school in Wetaskiwin but at age 16 she was swept off her feet by a tall, handsome gentleman named Johnny. They would often spend their time at dance halls at Lone Ridge, Usona, and even the Ponoka Stampede.
On October 29, 1946 they said their vows at St. John’s Lutheran Church and were married for over 50 years. Together they raised four children, Troy, Gerald, Patti and Leanne. Hilda worked at the Egg Grading Station, then at the Kresge Lunch Counter and later at Montgomery’s Department Store where she remained for over 25 years. Her passion for music kept her busy. She played the organ for her church for 46 years. She also played piano for Hoffman’s Band, the Moose choirs and the Fun Singers.
Hilda was active in her community with the Women of the Moose and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Legion. Hobbies included playing horseshoes, fishing, camping and knitting for her grandchildren.
Her last years were spent at Sagebrush Optima Living. Hilda was predeceased by her husband John, son Troy Dewald, daughter Leanne Wright, sisters Myrtle Forth and Doris Schneider.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Gerald Dewald (Lee) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; daughter, Patti Balback (Larry) of Surrey, BC; grandchildren, Michelle Driscoll (Kirk), Michael Dewald (Tula), Jennifer Russell (Devin), Morgan Desjarlais (Davis), Meredith Murray Meade (Matthew), Ashli Wright, Dilan Wright; as well as numerous great- grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
