Hilda Karlo Obituary

Hildegard (Hilda) Karlo
August 3, 1924 to May 19, 2024 (age 99)

Hilda Karlo (nee Kurtz) passed away on May 19, 2024 and has been reunited with the love of her life, Ed Karlo. She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn (Eric) Heilman; grandchildren, Raeleen (Brent) Metzker and Trent (Nicole) Heilman; great-granddaughters, Peyton, Kali, Shaylan and Taylor as well as her sisters, Lily (Howard) Smith, Margaret Forth and Eleanor Pydde.
Hilda was born in Ludwipol, Poland, now Ukraine, on August 3, 1924 to Emil and Amalja Kurtz. The family emigrated to Canada in 1927 where they settled in the Kavanagh area. They purchased a quarter section of land West of Millet in the Porto Bello area and built a small, two room cabin which they moved into in 1930. She attended Porto Bello School and the family went to St Peter’s Lutheran Church.
In 1944 she married Ed Karlo and they lived on the family farm just west of Wetaskiwin. In 1945 Evelyn was born. Hilda worked very hard on the farm with Ed. She had a special affection for her vegetable and flower gardens and all of the animals. Her skills at baking and cooking were exceptional and her apple pies could not be beat.
In 1986 they retired to Wetaskiwin which allowed more time for their grandchildren, and in later years, the great-grandchildren. Gardening, baking and meeting with her family and friends for coffee filled her days.
Hilda was predeceased by her husband, Ed Karlo; parents, Emil and Amalja Kurtz; brother, Walter Kurtz and sisters, Antonio Fibick and Elsie Feldberg.
A Funeral Service will be held on June 4, 2024 at 1:30 pm at Grace Lutheran Church 4218 – 56 Avenue, Wetaskiwin, Alberta.  A lunch will follow the funeral service. (The Interment will be at St John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery and will precede the funeral at 11:00 am)
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grace Lutheran Church or the Wetaskiwin Health Foundation.
